Marcel Marcel scores two goals to get the win

GATINEAU – After winning the first round of the playoffs against the Saint John Sea Dogs last week, the playoff action resumed last night at the Slush Puppie Centre as the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies came to town for game #1 of the quarterfinal series. It was once again a packed house at the CSP and the 5,000 fans wasted no time in getting the amphitheatre buzzing with energy from the first note of the national anthem.

Oh, Marcel! (Oh, Marcel)

Midway through the first period, Isaac Belliveau took a shot that deflected off a skate to the right of the goalie. Marcel Marcel jumped on the puck and sent it into the back of the net to open the scoring. The “Marcel Galarneau” song from the Dashing Cowboys was heard and the fans chanted “Oh, Marcel! Louis Robitaille’s men went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of play.

Early in the second period, it was Captain Olivier Nadeau’s turn to get on the score sheet as he redirected a cross-ice pass from Alexis Gendron to double the lead.

After scoring his first goal of the playoffs earlier in the game, Marcel Marcel was eager to hear the Cowboys Fringants song a second time! At 15:33 of the second period, Marcel took a long pass from Vincent Maisonneuve before grabbing the puck and beating the opposing defense. The Czech forward was alone against the Huskies’ goalie and tripled the Gatineau’s lead!

At the end of the second period, Riley Kidney and Alexis Gendron got into offensive territory on a two-on-one basis. Kidney passed to Gendron who scored his 9th goal of the playoffs! Cam MacDonald closed the books with an empty net goal late in the third period and the Olympiques won the first game of the series by a score of 5-0.

“The crowd gave us a lot of energy and they always do” -Marcel Marcel, first star of the game

The action will resume at the Slush Puppie Centre this afternoon for game two of the quarter-final series between the Olympiques and the Huskies starting at 4:00 pm.
